Global jobs loss looms amidst COVID-19 scourge

Predicated on the lingering pandemic, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has, in its latest data presentation, estimated that over 1.6 billion people would lose their jobs.

Of the 3.3 billon people that make up the global workforce, that’s about 50% casualty on the entire sum.

In what can be best described as a post-Covid aftermath, hundreds of millions of Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (SMEs), worldwide, have also been projected to be badly hit.

Consequently, many would have to continue to work from home, some more would lose their jobs as a result of downsizing, while others would have to stoop for a pay-cut, as is the case already with footballers and football clubs.

The previous estimate was for a 6.7per cent drop, equivalent to 195 million full-time workers. This is due to the prolongation and extension of lockdown measures, and would deal a deadlier blow on more businesses.

On the average, the entire 7.8billion population of the world would, directly or indirectly, be affected, since everyone is connected to either the civil service or to SMEs for livelihood.

Just this morning, in my phone conversation with an entrepreneur (name withheld), the situation may have largely affected the mind.

“I had massive plans then but all of a sudden, the inflow stopped coming as it used to. It, first of all, affected the pocket then the mind.

“Now that the industry is down, I am trying to work out strategies that will take me back once things pick up.

“For men that have a problem with erection, go and check. The problem is often their pocket and mind, not their manhood. I thank God it didn’t get to my manhood,” he said in a rather frustrating but sarcastic undertone.

Statistics has also shown that, worldwide, more than 436 million enterprises face high risks of serious disruption. These startups are operating in the hardest-hit economic sectors, including some 232million in wholesale and retail, 111million in manufacturing, 51million in accommodation and food services, and 42million in real estate and other business activities.

Baffled by the development, ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder, was quoted to have said that, “For millions of workers, no income means no food, no security and no future. As the pandemic and the jobs crisis evolve, the need to protect the most vulnerable becomes even more urgent.

“Millions of businesses around the world are barely breathing. They have no savings or access to credit. These are the real faces of the world of work. If we don’t help them now, these enterprises will simply perish.”

Except by a divine intervention and perhaps proactive steps by government at all levels, all over the globe, there may be nothing left to be called a workforce, after the COVID-19 scourge.

Business Owner Turns Restaurant Into Gorcery Store For Customers.

April 9, 2020

Worried about infection from take-out or groceries? Watch these 3 tips.

About a month ago, Anthony Strong finally opened a dining room for family-style meals in his San Francisco restaurant, Prairie. He saved up for renovations and shuttered the restaurant for four days to complete construction and was excited to unveil it to customers.”It was going to be amazin” He said, and it was amazing, for an entire week.”Soon after Strong opened the new space, San Francisco started enacting social distancing practices in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Restaurants were ordered to restrict their operations. Strong knew that his new concept — sharing meals with strangers — wouldn’t work.

So he decided to start selling the food and ingredients he buys in bulk to individual customers, essentially transforming his restaurant into an independent grocery store. The idea was a hit.

“We’re blowing through product,” he said. “It’s been amazing to see people from the neighborhood that we knew as diners coming in,” he added. “They used to geek out on dishes off of our charcoal grills, and now they’re geeking out on the fact that we have the only stocked pasta shelves in the city.”Strong is not the only restaurateur who has started selling grocery ingredients to customers.Across the country, cafes and restaurants are scrambling to keep their businesses afloat. Restaurants that relied on dine-in customers are rapidly coming up with ways to hold onto customers who are no longer allowed into dining rooms. Delivery is one option, but it’s expensive — businesses that use third-party services like Grubhub generally have to pay them a fee, which could eat into margins that are already razor thin.

Selling groceries is a way to avoid that problem. They sell items they already sell, in a different form. Opening up temporary grocery stores helps bump up the number of supermarkets in the country, which could ease crowding or delivery bottlenecks. It’s also a way to try to support struggling suppliers.

Many restaurants had to lean into delivery during this time. But for Strong, avoiding delivery was important. He didn’t want to be beholden to thosethird-party services. For him and others, delivery was never a good option.

April 8, 2020

The Lagos State government has agreed to withdraw charges against former governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in Lagos State, Babatunde Gbadamosi, his wife Folasade, and popular singer Naira Marley.

This is as the defendants accepted to tender written apologies to the Lagos State Government, as well as to issue undertakings to comply with the directive on lockdown and social distancing, including a stay in isolation for the next 14 days.

The state government agreed to withdraw the charge against the three defendants based on the remorse they showed, however, this is still subsequent upon their fulfilling three conditions.

They were therefore not arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting in Ogba today, April 8.

The conditions for which their charge was dropped include:

1) They have to write a formal apology to the Government of Lagos State which will solidify the remorsefulness shown by them.

(2) They have to give an undertaking in writing that they will continue to comply with the directives of Mr President and Mr Governor which is the subject matter of the case before the court.

(3) In view of the danger which the state believes they’ve put themselves by attending a gathering exceeding 20 persons, they must agree to go on 14 days isolation to protect other members of the public from any likely danger.

The defendants through their counsel all agreed to the conditions and the court has adjourned till tomorrow for the prosecutor to brief the court on whether all the conditions have been met failing which they will be arraigned.

Gbadamosi and Naira Marley had earlier on Monday turned themselves in to the police after flouting the state government’s restriction order on social distancing.

This was after they attended a party organised by Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele Bello in celebration of her husband’s birthday, Abdulrasheed Bello popularly known as JJC Skillz.

The couple were arraigned on Monday and sentenced to one week of community service and asked to pay a fine of N100,000 each

April 8, 2020

Controversial Nollywood actor, Uche Maduagwu has taken to his Instagram page to write an open letter to the Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu asking him to dash out N25k to Lagosians if he intends to extend the lockdown of the state over coronavirus pandemic.

“Dear Governor #Babajidesanwoolu, the only thing worse than Coronavirus in Lagos right now is HUNGER…

“I am an #Igbo man who knows #history, hunger is what ended the fighting spirits of Igbos during the civil war, so nobody should lecture me, it is laughable for us to follow #UK#Italy or #Spain in doing lockdown without the necessary palliative for the masses 路‍♀️or have we forgotten so soon that over 80 million Nigerians allegedly live on less than one Dollar per day? 路‍♂️Even this 2 weeks #covid19 lockdown in #Lagos is making Lagosians cry and in serious hunger, with over 20 million people allegedly living in Lagos, how many homes has Governor Babajide Sanwoolu reached with food and money? Is this how lockdown is in #London or #Rome? Is it the coronavirus our government at the state level is more interested in or the masses?  President Buhari has done fantastic in federal government palliative, what of our governors? They say a hungry man is an angry man, true or false?”

Makeup mogul Kylie Jenner, 22, has topped Forbes’ World’s Billionaires list again after another successful year.

There is no doubt that Kylie Jenner is hugely successful at the tender age of 22.

The superstar has topped the Forbes’ World’s Billionaire list for the second year in a row – meaning she is still the world’s youngest ever self-made billionaire.

After being born into a family of fame, the star has worked hard to build her own business empire, which in turn has made the mum-of-one a billionaire.

At 21, she made it to Forbes’ list in March 2019.

The brunette beauty secured her spot further when she sold 51% of her makeup business, Kyle Cosmetics, to Coty Inc. in a $600million deal.

The deal was closed in January, and values the makeup mogul’s business at around $1.2billion.

It left the star one of just 2,095 people in the world with a 10-digit net worth.

How Covid-19 tricks its way into the human body.

April 8, 2020

The virus that causes Covid-19 acts like a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” by using sugars to trick its way into the human body, according to new research.

Scientists at the University of Southampton have created a model of the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus that causes Covid-19 which reveals how it disguises itself to enter human cells undetected.

But they found that the virus is not as heavily protected as some others such as HIV.

The team, led by Professor Max Crispin, say the model will provide “crucial and encouraging” information for scientists creating a vaccine.

Prof Crispin explained that the Sars-CoV-2 virus has a large number of spikes sticking out of its surface which it uses to attach to and enter cells in the human body.

These spikes are coated in sugars, known as glycans, which disguise their viral proteins and help them evade the body’s immune system.

Prof Crispin said: “By coating themselves in sugars, viruses are like a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

“But one of the key findings of our study is that despite how many sugars there are, this coronavirus is not as highly shielded as some other viruses.

“Viruses like HIV, which hang around in one host, have to evade the immune system constantly and they have a really dense coat of glycans as a shield to the immune system.

“But in the case of the coronavirus the lower shielding by sugars attached to it may reflect that it is a ‘hit and run’ virus, moving from one person to the next.

“However, the lower glycan density means there are fewer obstacles for the immune system to neutralise the virus with antibodies. So this is a very encouraging message for vaccine development.”

The research was carried out using equipment previously provided by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through the Collaboration for AIDS Vaccine Discovery.
